The prime costs of land has meant that areas that were considered unsuitable for building in the past, such as brownfield sites and river alluvium flood planes are now considered as building plots.

Due to the natural emission of methane, carbon dioxide (and in some sites volatile organic compounds), there is a need to protect against an ingress of these gases into the building.
